The Causes Of Low Self Esteem
The simple definition of self-esteem is the way you feel about yourself and how you judge your self-worth. These factors can have a serious impact on the decisions you make and the way you live your life.
Those with low self-esteem will often hold themselves back because they don’t think that they are good enough or that what they have to offer is meaningful enough to make a difference. Studies have shown that people with higher than average self- esteem are often much more successful than those who have an abnormally low self-esteem.
What causes low self-esteem and is there anything that we can do to improve the way we see ourselves? Let’s take a closer look at some of the top causes of low self-esteem:
Body Image- Body image is the number one cause of low self-esteem in everyone from teens to adults. If you are not happy with the way your body looks, you will not feel that you are good enough to participate in activities with others, conversations with others or to take an opportunity that comes your way. Whether you are overweight, underweight, short, tall or just right, the way you see yourself is what is important, not the way others see you.
Negative Peers- The attitudes of those around have a way of “rubbing off” on us. It can bring us down, make us negative and cause our self-esteem to tank. Sometimes, our peers have such low self-esteem that they treat us poorly and that can be another factor in the way we see ourselves and our self-worth.
Parents Who Were Uninvolved- The way we were raised as children has a definite impact on the way we see ourselves as adults. If your parents were uninvolved in our daily lives, we might feel as if they didn’t care about us or what we had to offer the world around us.
Abuse- Those who have been physically, sexually or mentally abused will have an incredibly low self-esteem and that could lead to depression or thoughts of suicide.
Setting Goals That Are Unattainable- Any time you set goals for yourself, they should, of course, be higher than average so you can work harder and achieve more when you finally reach those goals. But setting goals that are unrealistic can cause low self-esteem, especially when you consistently fail to reach those goals.
Whether you are trying to lose weight, get better grades or learn a new skill, setting goals that are realistic and attainable are important and they can help you achieve success and set new goals for yourself.
