A Natural Resolution to Depression without medication…A Body Mind Workers case study.
A gentleman contacted me to see if I could help as he was having a difficult time from a personal perspective. He was unemployed, had been diagnosed as clinically depressed, and was on a course of anti-depressants. He was also on the waiting list for Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) through the NHS.
The most interesting aspect of our first interaction was that he described himself as being ‘broken’, and he wanted me to ‘fix’ him.
I noticed that on several occasions during our conversation a certain word was popping up quite regularly…the little word of ‘WHY?’
He was focused on figuring out why things had happened the way they did. Why he was feeling this way, and why he couldn’t change.
So here was this gentleman, very friendly and likeable, but deeply unhappy and on medication. He was walking around believing that he was broken and investing all his energy into why this was so….
If you try that chemistry and physiology on for a moment – it’s not a nice place to be, and if left to sit at home and think and analyse it as much as possible, one very plausible road that this could lead to is depression.
With a small interruption – he shifted to a more resourceful state, and our work began.
We engaged in a Body Mind Worker session where we began to explore how the mind works. I explained the Body Mind Workers Map of the Mind, and he developed a wry smile as we discussed things such as fear, chaos and confusion.
He chuckled as he seemed to resonate with how fear can prevent you from moving forwards.
When discussing the symptoms of his depression, he described a specific ‘feeling’. When describing these symptoms, his nonverbal communication (the bits other than the words), and his overall neurology guided me to where he stored the problem within his mind. This process can be achieved through one of the unique principles of Body Mind Workers.
As we continued to explore how the mind works, by being an external observer, and by using myself as an external feedback system, he was amazed to find that he too, could now identify what and where the ‘problem’ was.
We paused for a moment as some emotion came to the surface.
One of the most amazing aspects of Body Mind Workers is that although he knew what the problem was, he did not need to share the details of it with me, those were his to keep. All he mentioned was that this was from something many years ago.
As he became aware of what he was not previously aware of, and by becoming the driver of his own vehicle so to speak, and with a fast improving handle on how to drive it, I could gently guide him so that he could update his old limiting beliefs, reframe what the problem had been, and to take the learning from it.
At this stage there was a noticeable physiological shift, both his body posture and his facial colour changed within a few seconds.
He was now experiencing some chemicals around his body that I would happily try on!
Over the next two sessions, we continued to learn more about how his mind works, how he could change his language patterns and outlook on things, and how he could take these learnings forwards in time and space.
Several weeks later he emailed me to say he was back exercising, off all medication, was beginning a course of study he had been procrastinating on, and had gained some employment.
He commented on both how he could feel the change in himself, and how those around him had marvelled at his transformation.
So…
How can you resolve depression naturally, and without pills?
To start with, begin to understand that you are not broken, you do not need fixing. What you may need is a little guidance and help to allow yourself to unlearn some of the thoughts/behaviours that do not serve you, and to relearn some new skills to approach life differently.
Secondly, realise if you have survived this far, your unconscious is designed to keep things the way they are, so to create this change on your own can be extremely difficult. Within a Body Mind Workers session, you can be assisted in learning how your mind works, to update your old limiting beliefs, and to reframe past events.
The goal is for you to move on in life and to enjoy it, with you firmly in the driver’s seat.
Have a goal - your mind and body work most efficiently and harmoniously when you are striving towards a goal that is in line with your highest values and beliefs.
Finally, find someone who can empower you and help channel your inner resources to achieve what it is you want. As one of the key messages of Body Mind Workers will champion…
“Whatever you think you are, you are always more than that”.
As both a person and a Body Mind Worker, if you are struggling and have decided you would like to become more in control of your life, I would like to help you realise that.
